Tyko grew up in a bustling community of rowdy otters, with an impressive number of siblings. His family and friends were all happy-go-lucky; the few vermin that ever disturbed them were easy to fight off. The Streambar clan was master of the river, or at least their part of it, and it was a nice place to grow up in. Tyko spent his days playing on the muddy riverbank with his brothers and sisters, swimming and diving, and catching fish. Life was great. There were pikes in the river, but they were small ones, and the bolder otters often wrestled with them. Tyko didn’t dare; the teeth were too big and scary, and he had nightmares about the nasty fish throughout his childhood. But his brother did; everyone talked about Tyko’s brother Rugg, who was the brawniest otter born in six generations to the Streambar clan. Tyko didn’t mind living in Rugg’s shadow; he was a friendly chap, the best brother ever in Tyko’s opinion. It wasn’t because of Rugg that Tyko left. He was just too curious about the outside world. Life was great here at home, but also very predictable in the long run. Rugg would become their Skipper eventually, and maybe Tyko would settle down with some pretty ottermaid, raise a pile of young ‘uns, grow old, and die. He wanted to see the world; meet other creatures, not just the curmudgeonly old hedgehog that lived in the woods nearby, but all sorts of folks. He wanted to see if it was possible to leave Streambar and still be happy, even without the ruckus of the family. So with cheerful goodbyes, and a solid pat on the back from his brother, Tyko set off one day, promising to come back and visit at some point; but he’s got a lot of ground to cover before he’s ready to go home again.
