“Tree?” Scamp looked up at the lofty oaks with their high arcing branches, the sheer height made his head spin. Did Tyco really want them to climb up that high? Wouldn’t it be dangerous if they fell?
“Scamp not tree mouse….” He too wondered about the abbey Aster had talked about, then he had a thought which cheered him up. High up in the branches of a tree they should be able to see a large place or at see a lot more of the forest.
“high spy?!” Scamp practically chirped as he bounced pointing at the taller trees.

Still mulling over decisions and planning, Tyko's train of thought was interrupted by Scamp's query. "Hm.. What? Oh, no, I just meant that we can't sleep on the road, we'd have to go camp out deeper in the woods, where it would be harder for vermin or somebeast to find us," he explained distractedly. The sun was still fairly high in the sky; evening was a long way off yet. But still... how to find the Abbey?
And then Scamp came up with a brilliantly simple solution. At first, the otter didn't understand; he watched Scamp confusedly for a moment. Then his face lit up. "Of course! If we find a tall enough tree, we could probably see the entire forest. And even if we couldn't, we could still probably see enough to find a gap in the trees, where the Abbey could be." Tyko gave the mouse a dubious look. "I'm not such a great climber, but... I don't know if it's so safe for you to go up there either..."

“Not tree mouse” Scamp repeated with a shake of his head. He didn’t like heights and Scamp didn’t blame Tyko if the otter wasn’t willing to make the climb either and patted the paw he held.
“no climb ok” the tiny mouse muttered quietly. He then pointed further up the road. “walk walk?” just in case it didn’t sink Scamp began toddling forward, maybe they would find the abbey at the end, like a prize for a race.

Tyko nodded with a touch of relief. "You're right. We're not squirrels, we've got no business in trees. All roads go somewhere, right? We'll find something, even if we don't find the Abbey. And Mossflower might be big, but it isn't endless. We'll get somewhere, eventually." He whistled another few bars of an improvised tune, and started walking forward along the overgrown road again, matching his step down to Scamp's shorter stride.

Firedance's sensitive ears caught the sounds of two voices and then a couple of bars of a song. She scampered along the branches and looked down at the Otter and the young mouse. Smiling, she slid back along to the tree trunk and then proceeded to run down it and land in front of them.
"Hi!" She exclaimed, Finally please that she had come across others. "I'm Firedance Songpaw, But you can call me Fire. Who are you?" She asked, Her voice quickening as she became more and more excited. Her black tail twitched and she peered curiously at the two animals, "I'm looking for RedWall Abbey. Do you know where it is perhaps? I saw some ruins from the tree tops over there and I thought perhaps it was there. It-would-be-very-cool-y'know-all-those-tails-to-prove-true-would-be-so-awesome!" She grinned and sucked in a huge breath.
Fire then realized that she'd gotten so excited that she had been talking or rambling without a breath and blushed. "Sorry, It's just when I get excited I tend to do that." She grinned again and nodded her black head.

Who was this strange dark squirrel? Was she a friend? Scamp squeezed Tyko’s paw wanting him to say something. Squirrels were usually friends but Scamp didn’t know… wait… did she just say she knew about Redwall? Yay! Maybe she could show them the way.
The little mouse decided to be friendly and waved his free paw at the squirrel happily before he pointed to himself
“Scamp” this was said with a tone that in its childish way brooked no argument, female creatures always tried to call him cutie or some such and since he was two seasons old he was nipping this in the bud right away.

Tyko was taken aback for a moment at the sudden, unexpected appearance of a squirrel; these woods were apparently more populated than he had previously thought. He quickly composed himself though, and a cheerful, friendly smile broke out on his face. "Well, good afternoon, Miss Fire. My name's Tyko Streambar. What a funny little coincidence- as of five minutes ago, we've been looking for the Abbey too. Shall we join forces? What with your tree-hoppin' talents, my paw-holding expertise, and Scamp's leadership, we'll get there in no time, eh?" Tyko chuckled good-naturedly. "Ruins sounds like a likely place to start with. If it ever even existed, it'd be just that by now. What I heard, it's been empty for years... my mama told me stories about it when I was knee-high to a watershrimp. She said it was just a legend, but others say it's true, so who am I to say what's what?" He shrugged nonchalantly.

Far below him, three entities conversed. Two at a mature size, but the third was small, tiny even, miniature if you wanted to push it. Riding the wind downwards into the tops of the trees, where any nocturnal predator who might have been giving pursuit would suffer difficulty in reaching him, the Mystic Bat of Redwall Abbey clawed his way along a particularly long and gnarled branch, which twisted and curved almost like a petrified serpent. Digging his talons into the bark, he hung upside down and watched the travellers. What luck! Oh, splendid and glorious!
“Hello down there-there!” he squeaked loudly. “How fortuitous, unforeseen and what bally good luck that I have found you all-all!” He dropped off, and barely caught himself in mid-air with a flap of his wings. It was lucky he did, or he might have landed right on top of poor Firedance. The frankly uncoordinated move sent him twirling along the desert path where he kicked up a cloud of dust before flipping himself up onto his feet, hoping that his audience would take it for a big performance and not the clumsy tumblings of an unprepared simpleton like himself.
“Ha-ha!” he laughed loudly and cheerfully. “It looks like fate saw fit to deposit me right in front of you-you!” A bow and another introduction of his most peculiar person followed.

When this new creature appeared in front of them Scamp ran around and hid behind Tyko, releasing the otters paw and latching onto the tail again. Who was this strange creature? Was he a friend? The mouse babe clung even tighter to his protector as the newcomer’s action spawned a dust cloud.
When his ears caught the bat introducing itself he briefly poked his head out, but he quickly pulled back once to his hiding position once more.
“Scary” Scamp whined first a sudden appearance from miss fire and now a strange flying mouse? The tiny dibbun looked to Tyko for guidance as he sucked on his free paw.

"It's nice to meet you Scamp, And you Tyko." She laughed merrily, "Of course, I would love to join you." Fire smiled and then froze. She had heard something from above.
Looking up she caught sight of a bat and as he dislodged himself was aimed straight for her. Luckily, the bat flapped his wings and ended up next to her instead and the poor mouse babe was scared of him. "C'mon Scamp. He won't hurt ye' I promise." Fire called to the little mouse as he hid behind Tyko, She walked toward him and held a hand out for him to hold.
"It is nice to meet you. I am Firedance Songpaw but most call me Fire. Do you happen to know where the Abbey is perhaps?" She asked looking at Roland, Still holding the hand out for Scamp.
Her black tail twitched slightly and she cautiously watched the otter and the bat. She was not so sure of the bigger mammal nor was she too sure of the seemingly clownish bat. Shaking her head in a miniscule fashion she smiled and turned back to Scamp, The poor sweet mouse, She wondered how he hand ended up with Tyko in the first place.

Tyko glanced up, startled, as a funny voice with lots of odd mannerisms hailed them from above. The figure flapped out of the trees, nearly landing on Miss Fire before cartwheeling to the side in a rather ungraceful maneuver. Only when the creature came to a stop in the dust could he figure out what it was, one of those flying mouse things, a what-was-it-called, hm, bat. "Er, hello," the otter said after the bat's whimsical little speech, "My name's Tyko Streambar, and this is Scamp here." He gestured at the quivering mouse that clung tightly to his tail.
Twisting his head around, Tyko patted Scamp's head comfortingly. "Don't you worry, matey, I'll watch your back if you watch mine. There's no need to be afraid, now." The otter sensed that this was just a slightly batty (no pun intended) stranger, with good intentions who meant them no harm, despite his startling personality.

Roland noted that the first matter of business was to appease the fearful baby mouse hiding behind his much larger companions. With a sweep of his leathery wings, he secretly delved into one of the magick-baring purses on his belt, then extended one webbed appendage until the tip of his claw disappeared behind Scamp’s ear.
“Oh? My word, your ears must be as big as mine-mine!” he squeaked. “Look at what I found back there-there!” He slipped what he had been stowing between two creases in his wing, now clutched neatly in his claw; a glittering coin poached from a Vermin treasure trove. It was among the simplest of illusions but it was still a classic for the dibbuns. He made to pop it in the youngling’s paw, then quickly clapped his wings together and blew on where the coin was, reopened them and let loose a beautiful red butterfly, which perched itself neatly on Scamp’s nose, opening its wings to make it seem as if he were wearing a colourful ballroom mask.
Straightening himself, the bat turned his attention to Firedance in response to her query. “Ah!” he announced. “You seek Redwall Abbey and most wondrous coincidence of coincidences, I have just come from there seeking aid-aid! Come, all of you, we must hasten to the others awaiting us and expose our prodigious luck-luck! Follow-follow!” And so he was off, flying ahead of them to lead the way to the legendary church-ground.

Scamp clapped when the strange fellow made a coin appear behind his ear, and then the bat took the trick one step further and Scamp laughed at the big red butterfly. He was so distracted by the magic that he actually released his hold on Tyko for a moment, though he quickly groped again for the otter’s paw.
“Redrall Abbey” Scamp murmured from behind the butterfly as Roland claimed he had come from there as the bat took off Scamp once again found the paw he was searching for… would Tyko stay once they arrived at the abbey?
Scamp yawned and the butterfly took off fluttering a figure 8 around the squirrel and otter before flying off to parts unknown.

Fire chuckled and shook her head, Looking skyward she brushed her clothes off and began to follow the bat at a slow but casual pace. After they had been walking for a while she got bored and uncomfortable with the silence and looked back at Tyko and Scamp.
"So, How did you two meet?" She asked, Slowing even more so she walked along side them both. Her black tail twitched, Fire flicked her sensitive ears around at the forest. She felt slightly paranoid as she knew that there were Vermin and other bad creatures in the area but she shook it off and turned her attention back to Tyko and Scamp.

Tyko grinned at the bat's clever antics. It was fun to watch, even though it was just sleight of paw and smart illusions- right? When the bat took off, slowly winging towards the Abbey he claimed to have come from, Tyko strolled after him easily, picking his way over the larger tussocks of grass that sprouted in the middle of the ancient road, giving Scamp a helping paw when he needed it. He whistled softly as he walked along, without even realizing he did so; it was just a natural habit for him, especially since he had been alone for quite a while on his travels. Then his only companion was the cheery little tune he invented.
When Fire spoke, he glanced at Scamp, unsure how much he ought to say; not because it was a big secret, but because poor Scamp might not like being reminded of Aster if Tyko explained the full story. "Well, young Scamp here pounced on me rudder and only let go to snatch up my paw instead," the otter said with a laugh.
